When medication and non-invasive procedures fail to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of urology conditions, including these:
- Radical Prostatectomy
- Partial Nephrectomy
- Radical Nephrectomy
For many years, traditional “open” surgery has been the standard approach to treating a number of medical conditions. While safe and effective, this type of surgery involves a large incision that can take longer to heal.
Like other major surgeries, open urologic surgery can involve significant discomfort, a lengthy recovery and an increased, unpredictable risk of potentially long-term affects on continence and sexual function.
Fortunately, less invasive options are now available at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
Whenever it is appropriate for the patient, surgeons will utilize laparoscopy. This minimally invasive surgery features small incisions and minimizes unfavorable drawbacks.
Another option is the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, the da Vinci™ Surgical System. This approach is ideal for complex urologic surgery. It is especially effective and safer for a prostatectomy, which is performed in a tightly confined space surrounded by delicate nerves that affect urinary control and sexual function.
The robot provides vibrant, 3D images that magnify the surgical site. The surgeon utilizes this enhanced visibility and its four arms perform procedures through small incisions, precisely manipulating tiny surgical instruments with greater control.
Robotic-assisted surgery minimizes the pain and risk associated with large incisions. As a result, patients recover quicker, which shortens the time they stay in the hospital and reduces associated hospital costs. Patients also enjoy smaller scars and excellent clinical outcomes.
Given these highly desirable patient benefits, a growing number of surgeons and support staff are determined to establish a center of excellence for robot-assisted surgery at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
Not everyone will be a candidate for robot-assisted surgeries. If your doctor recommends urologic surgery, find out if this approach is right for you.
Robot-assisted Urology surgeries include:
- Prostatectomy – Surgical removal of all or part of the prostate gland.
- Nethrectomy – Surgical removal of the kidney.
- Partial Nethrectomy – Surgical removal of part of the kidney.
- Nethroureterectomy – Surgical removal of a kidney and its ureter.
- Pyeloplasty – Surgical reconstruction or revision of the renal pelvis to drain and decompress the kidney.
